Accra By Night: Discovering Ghana's Capital After Dark

A Double-Decker Bus to Rediscover Accra

Launched in April 2025 by the Ghana Tourism Development Company, the 'Accra By Night' programme quickly won over visitors. In just eight months, more than 740 passengers boarded the open-top double-decker bus to discover Ghana's capital under an entirely new light — or rather, night. This guided tour takes visitors through the city's most iconic neighbourhoods, from Osu to Jamestown, passing by the majestic Independence Square, the second-largest city square in the world, lit up spectacularly after dark.

The Global Capital of Afrobeats

Accra has established itself as one of the world's epicentres for Afrobeats music. The birthplace of highlife and azonto, the city pulses to the rhythm of its clubs and open-air bars that stay open until dawn. The Osu and Labone districts are home to the most popular venues, where local and international DJs keep a cosmopolitan crowd dancing. For travellers with a layover at Kotoka International Airport, an evening in Accra is an unforgettable experience that alone justifies an extended stopover in the capital.

From Night Markets to Local Flavours

Beyond the music, nighttime Accra reveals a thriving food scene. Street stalls serve kelewele — spiced fried plantains — steaming jollof rice and suya skewers fragrant with spices. Oxford Street comes alive particularly in the evening, giving visitors the chance to taste local specialities while discovering Ghanaian crafts. Kente cloths with vibrant patterns, traditional beads and wooden sculptures are traded in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

An Ambitious Tourism Strategy

The 'Accra By Night' programme is part of Ghana's broader strategy to position itself as a premier tourist destination in West Africa. The Ghana Tourism Development Company has invested in innovative digital tools, including the Ghana Tourism Marketplace platform, to make booking activities and accommodation easier. The stated goal is clear: to make Ghana an unmissable tourism hub by 2026, banking on diversified offerings and the appeal of its nightlife.

Practical Tips for Enjoying the Night

The 'Accra By Night' tours generally depart in the early evening and last approximately three hours. Booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak tourist season (November to February). From Kotoka Airport, the city centre is accessible in 20 to 30 minutes by taxi or ride-hailing services. Pack light clothing — temperatures remain pleasant even after sunset — and don't forget your camera to capture Accra's lights under the stars.
